Brett Carey, Chairman of the Board Dr. Carey joined the Board of Directors in 2013 and serves as the ex-officio on all Committees. He is the CEO of Kalo Physical Therapy and Vice President of IREHAB.com. He also serves as adjunct faculty for Old Dominion University. He brings experience in the fields of public health, physical therapy, business development, mobile healthcare and start up mentoring. Dr. Carey has served on non-profit boards since age eighteen and has been inducted into March of Dimes Hall of Fame. He also received the Outstanding Alumnus award for Old Dominion university in 2016. He also enjoys surfing, vegan cooking,
Earl Betts, Vice-Chairman Mr. Betts joined the Board of Directors in 2014 and is the Vice-Chairman of the Board of Directors and the Committee Chairman of the HR Committee. Mr. Betts is an entrepreneur whose businesses include photography and fine wine sales. Mr. Betts worked for Family Support Services and lead the Fatherhood Initiative for 5 years. Mr. Betts’ background includes entertainment contract administration, Human Resources, Parent Education, Child Passenger Safety and resource management. Mr. Betts is a creative operations manager with experience in labor management, complicated problem solving and an ambassador to diverse staff and cultures, always finding common ground to work together and achieve team success, while maintaining effective business management. Mr. Betts believes in building and maintaining long-term relationships with clients while also making sure that internal teams are doing all they can to help keep those relationships strong. In his free time, Mr. Betts spends time with his wife and child, continues his photography pursuits and enjoys connecting with people.
JoAnn Freed, Secretary
Ms. Freed joined the Board of Directors in 2014 and serves on the Development, Membership and Quality Improvement Committees. Ms. Freed owns and operates her own consulting business which provides technical assistance, and education, to nonprofits working with children and families. Ms. Freed also serves on the Board of First Relationships (the Hawaii Infant Mental Health Association) and is President of the Board of the Kona Family Literacy and Interaction Program (K-FLIP). She also enjoys fiber art with a special interest in art quilting and doll-making.
Terri Toki, Treasurer
As founding board member, Ms. Toki has provided over a decade of service to WHCHC. Ms. Toki is the President of TNT Payroll Services, Inc.. Ms. Toki serves on the Development Committee, the Finance Committee, the Facilities Committee and the Audit Committee.
Nellie Medeiros, Past President Ms. Medeiros joined the Board of Directors at West Hawaii Community Health Center in 2009 and became Chairman in 2014. She serves as the Corporate Development and Marketing Manager for Hawaii Community Federal Credit Union and brings 43 years of experience in finance and banking to the WHCHC BOD. Ms. Medeiros has also served as Treasurer of the community non-profit organization KUPA – Kamaaina United to Protect the Aina, is a member of the Kona Young Farmers, and serves on the King Kamehameha Day Celebration Parade Committee. Ms. Medeiros interests include reading, writing, traveling, genealogy, and cultural and historical preservation. She enjoys spending time with her grandchildren.
Mr. Haitsuka joined the Board of Directors in 2015 and serves on the Facilities, Human Resources and Membership Committees. He is a partner with the Carlsmith Ball law firm and serves as a board member for Friends of NELHA. Mr. Haitsuka brings experience in the fields of law and government. In his spare time, he enjoys spending time with his family.
Mr. Hoffmann joined the Board of Directors in 2010 and is Chair of the Audit/Compliance Committee. He also serves on the Finance, Facilities, and Audit/Compliance Committees. Mr. Hoffmann brings experience in the fields of fundraising, politics, and government. He also provides services for the Annunciation Catholic Church, Food Basket Inc., and the North Hawaii Rotary. Mr. Hoffmann is a board member of Community Enterprises Inc., and the Hawaii Island Leadership Series – Ulumau. Additionally, Mr. Hoffmann is a retired US Colonel and served as a Hawaii County Councilman.
Mr. Kreuzer joined the Board of Directors in 2013 and serves on the Facilities, Audit/Compliance, and Health Services Committees. Mr. Kreuzer is the CEO of Kona Community Hospital and has many years of experience in the field of health care. He is also on the Beacon Community Board, ACHE Hawaii Chapter Board, and the American College of Healthcare Executives. His interests include marine biology, swimming, and household projects.
Mr. Yap joined the Board of Directors in 2014 and serves on the Development, Membership and Human Resource Committee. He is an active member of the Lions Club of Kona and Safari Club International. Yap brings experience and knowledge in the fields of business management and finance to WHCHC. In his spare time Yap enjoys exploring unchartered wilderness areas, finding creative ways to utilize renewable resources to benefit mankind, and keep these renewable resources sustainable through judicial conservation practices.
Ms. Logan joined the board in 2017. Ms. Logan is an Independent Insurance Broker with a background in strategic planning and risk management. Ms. Logan serves on the Development Committee, the HR Committee, the Membership Committee, and the Facilities Committee.
Patricia Gannon Achay
Position on Board: Board Member- serves on Health Services Committee and Quality Improvement Committee.
Occupation and Credentials: Nationally Board Certified Physician Assistant, M.S., PA-C.
Why I serve the WHCHC Board: I serve on the Board of Directors because I firmly believe in the Mission, Vision and Values of the West Hawaii Community Health Center. As a healthcare provider, I know the first-hand importance of access to quality medical care and the value it brings to our community. Being born and raised in this community it is an honor to be able to serve on the Board of Directors for a health care center that has and continues to make a positive and lasting impact in my community.
