Donna Altshul, RDH, BS: Dental Hygienist & Dental Program Director A native of Schenectady, New York, Donna received her Associate’s degree in Dental Hygiene from Hudson Valley Community College as well as her Bachelor’s degree in Management from SUNY Empire State College. Donna joined WHCHC in 2008, bringing with her a myriad of experiences. As a champion for dental health, Donna has worked in private practice, a school sealant program, a dental program in a community health center, and a hospital-based dental residency/dental program. Donna has also worked with the NYS Department of Health with the Bureau of Dental Health. When not in the office, Donna enjoys being outdoors and exploring the beautiful island while hiking, snorkeling, camping, and through meditation and healing practices.
Dr. John A. Gawlik, DMD, MHA: Pediatric Dentist, Dental Director Dr. Gawlik was born and raised in New Jersey, where he received his undergraduate degree from Rutgers University while on a 4-year Army ROTC Scholarship. He then completed dental school at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia. While serving as a dentist in the US Army, Dr. Gawlik completed a one-year General Dentistry Residency, two years of Advanced Training in Pediatric Dentistry, and a Master in Healthcare Administration from Baylor University. His 22-year Army career took him to Oahu, Italy, Germany, and several Mainland locations. After retiring from the Army in 2006, Dr. Gawlik worked in private practice in the Phoenix area until 2013, and then in community health on California’s Central Coast for several years before returning to Hawaii in 2017, where he is especially enjoying teaching pediatric dentistry to the NYU-Lutheran pediatric dental residents. Dr. Gawlik and his wife, who met in high school band, now play in the West Hawaii County Band. He also enjoys running, hiking, scuba diving, and paddling with the Keauhou Canoe Club. He and his wife have two successful grown sons living on the Mainland.
Susan Smith, RDH, BA: Dental Hygienist Born in Fresno, California, Susan attended Fresno City College, where she received her Associate of Science degree in Dental Hygiene. Afterwards, she received her Bachelor of Arts degree in Management and Organization Development from Fresno Pacific University. Before joining WHCHC in 2011, Susan worked in private general practices as well as periodontal specialty offices. In her spare time, Susan enjoys international travel, paddling with Keauhou Conoe Club, swimming, snorkeling, scuba diving, reading, and gardening.
Craig Stevenson, MD: Pediatrician
Dr. Stevenson was born in Washington, D.C. and attended Indiana University, where he pursued both a Bachelor’s Degree and a PhD. He earned his MD from the University of Kentucky and completed his residency at Oregon Health Sciences University. Dr. Stevenson served as the Medical Director at the Providence Childcare Center and also as the Director of Pediatrics at the Providence St. Vincent Hospital in Portland, Oregon. In 2005, Dr. Stevenson moved to Hawaii and began working with West Hawaii Community Health Center in 2009. He spends his free time playing the ukulele, cooking, and enjoying the beach.

Leon Matsuo, MD: Internal Medicine/Pediatrics Dr. Matsuo was born and raised in Kealakekua and attended the University of Hawaii John A. Burns School Of Medicine where he received his MD in 2007. He completed his residency in Internal Medicine/Pediatrics at the Banner Good Samaritan Medical Center Phoenix Children’s Hospital in Arizona. Dr. Matsuo returned to Kailua-Kona in 2011 to care for the underserved community and became a physician with WHCHC in July 2011. He enjoys being home in Hawaii and likes to study Native Hawaiian health, plant based nutrition, spend time with his wife and children, and practice health ministry with his family and church.
Namealoha Sells, MD: Family Physician Born and raised in Cedar City, Utah, Dr. Sells came to Hawaii for her undergraduate studies at the Brigham Young University Hawaii campus. While studying for her dual degree in Exercise and Sports Science and Hawaiian Studies, she sailed with Iosepa and Makalii, enjoyed spending time on the Big Island, and met her husband, who is from Kahuku. Dr. Sells attended medical school at the University of Utah and completed her residency with Intermountain Healthcare in Provo, Utah. In 2015, Dr. Sells joined West Hawaii Community Health Center, choosing the center due to the population served and her love of small towns and rural medicine. She particularly enjoys working with women and children, but her practice covers people of all ages and health needs. In Dr. Sell’s spare time, she enjoys running and spending as much time as possible with her three children.
